In the past, the neighbors called this place “El Bosque.” As its name suggests, it was once a small, dense woodland of oaks and white mulberries. Large rocks and a stream completed this miniature landscape, a true idyll for the neighborhood children who would come to get lost in it.

Fig. 2 A pool reminiscent of a traditional basin.
Fig. 3.
Fig. 4

Since then, the plot has been sold and subdivided, many trees have been felled, the land has been filled in, and the stream has been channeled. The new house is modern: with many angles, large windows, and mineral finishes that gave the space a certain rigidity. To counterbalance this and create a genuine outdoor living space, we designed a large wooden deck as an extension of the existing terrace. Its materiality and wave-like shape soften the entrance of the house and subtly integrate it into the garden. The terrace is dotted with deciduous trees that seem to grow naturally from it, dressing the space with their changing colors. They provide shade, conceal the house façade, and add verticality to the terrace.

To recall the historical presence of water and respond to the wishes of this large family, a water basin creates a bridge between the terrace and the garden. We designed it to be medium-sized so as not to clash with the scale of the space. Always seeking harmony, we chose a green mosaic finish that gives the pool its character while lending the water a more natural appearance.

As for the planting, it frames a central lawn, which serves as a play space for the children or as a spot for setting up a summer dining table. The planting beds are composed of species resistant to Torrelodones’ climate: intense summer heat with prolonged drought, and cold, dry winters.

Fig. 5

Fig. 6

The steep slopes on the sides of the house required the creation of small terraces using wooden sleepers.
The stepping-stone paths and stairs were made from granite, quarried locally. To preserve the home’s privacy, the old iron fence was replaced with a wooden slat screen, which jasmine and climbing roses will cover.

Gathering, remembering, softening— as guiding principles of this small village garden.

We drew inspiration from the naturalistic gardens we work with to design our own balcony Located in the Gràcia neighborhood, in the heart of Barcelona, it faces southwest and is exposed to the intense heat of the Mediterranean summer.

Fig. 3

We installed planters of various sizes and flexible BACSAC® pots fastened to the railings, allowing us to keep the circulation space clear while adding verticality. The apartment’s privacy is enhanced with upright plants that filter the views without blocking the surrounding modernist facades.

The planting palette consists of drought-tolerant, evergreen Mediterranean species. By combining textures, shapes, and colors, we created small, wild-inspired landscapes that remain visually engaging throughout the year. We completed the design with aromatic herbs and edible plants, which we renew seasonally and use in our daily life.

When we designed this garden, we had to respond to the needs and uses of a private home with three children and an architecture studio that welcomes a large team and clients on a daily basis.

In the strictly private area, reserved for domestic use, a large open space unfolds in front of the terrace, like an esplanade overlooking the mountain views. It serves as a play area for the children and is framed by dense, resilient plantings that help to conceal the perimeter walls.

Fig. 2.
Fig. 3
Fig. 4 Un espacio productivo, pensado hoy para los niños que viven en la casa, y mañana para los futuros trabajadores del estudio.

On the lower level, we started from a large flat plot, backfilled after the house was built. To create distinct zones and add depth, we envisioned several planting islands that punctuate the space. We played with topography and plant layers, giving rhythm and a sense of scale to the garden.

A meandering path weaves through the islands, connecting the various uses: the entrance to the studio, an outdoor kitchen, a central area designed for a dining or meeting table, and, at the far end, a vegetable garden and chicken coop.

Fig. 7 Árboles frutales y plantas medicinales están integrados en la paleta vegetal.
Fig. 8

We placed particular emphasis on planting native perennials and edible species. Each bed acts as a refuge for biodiversity: among the olive trees and fruit trees (pomegranate, pear, orange, fig…) unfolds a wide diversity of species, including grasses, groundcovers, and herbaceous plants. We chose vibrant colors —mainly pinks and yellows— that contrast beautifully with the deep green of the forest across the way.

Gradually, the color palette becomes more muted as you approach the small woodland that occupies the entire lower part of the garden. Populated mainly by mastic trees, narrow-leaved mock privet, and wild olives, we sought to create a sense of continuity between this space and the garden. This area will be developed in a second phase of the project. For now, we have built a yoga and meditation platform, nestled among the trees and following the curves of the pine and olive trunks.

This is a garden conceived to evolve over time, designed for a family that is committed and mindful of their lifestyle and environmental impact.

We envisioned this space for all its inhabitants—human and non-human alike. A garden for everyday life.

The project was structured around two main goals: bringing a wilder spirit back to the garden and creating a play space that connects children with their surroundings. With two little ones in the house, we felt it was essential for them to discover, explore, and truly make this place their own.

Fig 1. The garden before the project was implemented.
Fig. 2
Fig. 3. To visually integrate the new terrace, local granite rocks blend with the planting of Stipa ichu and Filipendula vulgaris, creating a harmonious, natural composition.

One of our first interventions was to reduce the paved area: we chose to remove tiles and open up green zones, giving plants back their protagonism. We prioritized the use of native species, specially adapted to the local climate and ecosystem, allowing for a sustainable ecological balance and a richer habitat for wildlife. Our inspiration came from the flora of the southern slopes of the Sierra de Guadarrama, near which the village is located.

The diversity of plant layers—trees, shrubs, climbers, groundcovers, grasses, and bulbs—creates a naturalistic garden that invites pollinators and enhances the biodiversity of the site. The design ensures an attractive landscape year-round, revealing the subtle transition of the seasons.

We zoned the garden according to use, combining intimate corners, welcoming and functional gathering areas, and play zones so that everyone can feel comfortable depending on their needs at any given time.

Fig. 7
Raw materials and a color that harmonizes with the wall

Fig. 8

We created a new seating area by placing a slightly elevated wooden deck at the back of the garden. Whether used as an outdoor dining area or chill out, it is a versatile space that can be easily appropriated. It is surrounded by holm oaks that provide welcome shade during the hot summer months, as well as perennial planting beds that integrate it into the garden and preserve its sense of privacy. Next to it, we designed an outdoor kitchen as a simple, almost raw piece. We selected a color that blends with the wall behind it and a countertop made from local granite, echoing the stones placed throughout the garden.

Near the pool, a corner where nature and play meet: anchored rocks and logs for climbing and jumping, plantings that awaken the senses (aromatic, edible, pollinator-friendly), inviting observation and interaction. These intuitive or “free” play elements offer an open-ended setting for children to explore and invent. Like loose parts, they multiply the possibilities of play, stimulate imagination and creativity, develop balance and coordination, and the presence of controlled risk teaches children to assess challenges and gain independence.

Fig. 9

Fig. 10. Logs and rocks as free-play elements, blending seamlessly into the garden.

Integrating free play into the landscape design allowed us to bring visual and ecological coherence: using natural materials (wood, local stone), plantings with seasonal interest (perennials, low-water groundcovers), and combining children’s creativity, sustainability, and a carefully curated aesthetic.

This makes the garden function simultaneously as a place for enjoyment, learning, and landscape conservation.

Can Parés is a beautiful Catalan masía, located next to the village of Sant Pere de Ribes, just a few minutes from the Sitges coastline.

It is the project and home of Caroline, Martin, and Romy. Passionate about art, music, and gatherings with friends, they have turned their house into a warm and inspiring guesthouse.

Fig. 2
Fig. 3.
Fig. 4

Mindful of the natural environment around them and committed to ecology and good food, they wanted to dedicate part of their garden to the creation of a permaculture vegetable garden. We worked hand in hand to design and build this space, completing the virtuous circle from farm to table.

The project was based on the principles of permaculture: saving water, optimizing space through dense planting, favoring self-seeding plants to reduce the need for seedlings, minimizing physical intervention by allowing the garden to evolve naturally, and applying organic cultivation techniques.

Fig. 5

We intervened as little as possible, avoiding soil tilling to preserve its nutritional richness. We created a series of lasagna beds, a permaculture technique that consists of layering organic matter to regenerate and naturally increase soil fertility. We planted a variety of vegetables, small fruits, and aromatic and medicinal herbs, and added an organic mulch to prevent soil erosion.

To accompany the creation of the vegetable garden, we provided a maintenance guide so they could continue cultivating and developing this fertile piece of land.

Today, we remain in touch and visit from time to time. Caring for the vegetable garden has become part of
their daily life, and their guests can enjoy a seasonal, home-cooked cuisine. The project continues to grow
naturally, with the addition of a small chicken coop that completes this domestic ecosystem.
