Fig. 1. Planting islands create new spaces and opportunities for use within the garden.

When we designed this garden, we had to respond to the needs and uses of a private home with three children and an architecture studio that welcomes a large team and clients on a daily basis.

In the strictly private area, reserved for domestic use, a large open space unfolds in front of the terrace, like an esplanade overlooking the mountain views. It serves as a play area for the children and is framed by dense, resilient plantings that help to conceal the perimeter walls.

On the lower level, we started from a large flat plot, backfilled after the house was built. To create distinct zones and add depth, we envisioned several planting islands that punctuate the space. We played with topography and plant layers, giving rhythm and a sense of scale to the garden.

A meandering path weaves through the islands, connecting the various uses: the entrance to the studio, an outdoor kitchen, a central area designed for a dining or meeting table, and, at the far end, a vegetable garden and chicken coop.

We placed particular emphasis on planting native perennials and edible species. Each bed acts as a refuge for biodiversity: among the olive trees and fruit trees (pomegranate, pear, orange, fig…) unfolds a wide diversity of species, including grasses, groundcovers, and herbaceous plants. We chose vibrant colors —mainly pinks and yellows— that contrast beautifully with the deep green of the forest across the way.

Gradually, the color palette becomes more muted as you approach the small woodland that occupies the entire lower part of the garden. Populated mainly by mastic trees, narrow-leaved mock privet, and wild olives, we sought to create a sense of continuity between this space and the garden. This area will be developed in a second phase of the project. For now, we have built a yoga and meditation platform, nestled among the trees and following the curves of the pine and olive trunks.

This is a garden conceived to evolve over time, designed for a family that is committed and mindful of their lifestyle and environmental impact.
